I’ve been wanting to post about choosing clean dairy without breaking the bank.
If you read this post, you know about what cheese you should be buying!
If you are new to clean eating, or just don’t have the financial resources to go 100% organic in your dairy purchases, there are options!
Just to review, here are few effects of rBST/rBGH
- rBST increases the risk of cancer by elevating levels of another hormone, IGF-1. High levels of IGF-1 can promote breast cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer.
- If you have even just subtle amounts of IGF-1, there’s a link to breast, prostate and colon cancer…the endocrine system is so sensitive that subtle effects can make a difference.
- Cows treated with rBST/rBGH have higher rates of udder infections-when they are treated with antibiotics, resistant bacteria can grow. People who later eat dairy products from these cows can also build up resistance.
- People who consume these dairy products could become resistant to antibiotics.
Buying organic dairy is best, because it means these cows are exclusively given organic feed, are kept in pens with adequate space, and are given periodic access to the outdoors.
That said, if you can’t go organic right now, you CAN go rBST/rBGH free!
After another round of phone calls to lots of companies, (don’t y’all love me for doing the work for you?!) here are brands that are free of hormones, but not necessarily organic.
