As we’ve started eating clean, I’ve been slowly researching “super foods”. Ways to get a little extra…..good stuff….. in our food.
Here are some of the *best* foods you can be eating, and ways of sneaking them into your family’s food!
One of the most powerful plant foods on the planet. Flax seeds will help reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes. Flax seeds contain vitamins B-1, B-2, C, E, and carotene. These seeds also contain iron, zinc, and trace amounts of potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, and vitamin E and carotene.
Wow! That is A LOT of nutrition packed in these little, inexpensive grains!
How to sneak it in….I put a few tablespoons of these in little man’s German Chocolate Oatmeal. He has no idea!
Although it looks like a grain, it’s not. It’s actually a seed. When cooked, it’s fluffy and tasty-a little like wild rice. The really cool thing about quinoa is that it is a complete protein. That means it contains all 9 essential amino acids that are required by the body as building blocks for muscles. A very rare find in a plant; this means it is treated just like meat by your body. Quinoa contains tons of vitamins (too many to list!), and has shown to be effective in preventing and treating these
Breast cancer, diabetes, and Artherosclerosis.
This truly is a super food! There are many health benefits of eating coconut meat, drinking coconut water, using coconut oil to cook/bake with, using coconut sugar, and eating coconut in general. Coconut has been shown to:

Not only is this green DIRT CHEAP, it is a nutrition power house! As far as greens go, kale is your best source of beta-carotene–one of the antioxidants believed to be a major player in the battle against cancer and heart disease. Kale also contains carotenoids. Carotenoids help keep UV rays from damaging your eyes and causing cataracts. Further, kale is an incredible source of well-absorbed calcium, which may help prevent osteoporosis.

How to sneak it in…..make a pesto!
The honey I’m talking about doesn’t come in a bear-shaped squeezy bottle. I’m talking about the good stuff. Raw, organic honey is the way to go. Did you know that honey has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties? It can be used as a natural antiseptic. I thought that was pretty cool! Honey is easily digestible and is a great energy boost for the body. Because honey is rich in antioxidants, it protects your heart. A study I read said that patients given a 2.5-ounce dose of honey every day for a month lowered both their total and LDL cholesterol, while they maintained or even lost weight. Honey may improve memory and reduce anxiety. Further, I use honey (under my pediatrician’s advice) all the time as a natural cough suppressant for my older two kiddos. I love honey!
How to sneak it in…..use it as a sweetener in any recipe; drizzle it on oatmeal!
